H
ints and tips. - Building a Top Navigation Menu

There is an easy way to build a Quick Page Layout using the Design Library. Follow these steps for the best results. Click on the Images to see a larger more detailed image. (This uses Version 2.0 templates and Stencils, so existing customers will need to download the free update before starting this exercise.)

OBJECTIVE: The objective is to achieve a screen mock-up which will look like this Sample.

Step 1
Start by selecting a page layout type that you want to create. In this example we have used a collaborative site template in Green.

Step 2
Now to position some Top Navigation menus. Start by selecting the Background image, which is the Top Nav -OTB (Banner)  from the Collaboration Site Top Navigation stencil.

Position the banner between the orange dashed lines, and using the 400% zoom nudge the banner shape into place.

Step 3
When SharePoint displays menu tabs in the Top Navigation it displays the current selection differently from the other available menu tabs in the navigation, so you need to decide which single menu item is selected.

We will add our first item as an Unselected menu tab.

From the Collaboration Site Top Navigation stencil select the Top Nav - Unselected shape and drag it onto the banner you just positioned.

Step 4
Select the shape by clicking on it until all the small squares turn green.

Step 5
Type in the label that you want your tab to display. Don't be concerned if it doesn't fit inside the tab shape, we will fix that in the next step.

In this example I have used "My Menu Tab"

Step 6

This step will bring your tab to life.

Select the Menu Tab Shape again, so the top and bottom row of little squares are grey. Using your mouse on the little green square on the right, expand the box.

Step 7
Move your mouse slowly. You only want the tab just big enough to fit the text in.

When this is done, you have done your first menu entry.

Step 8
Continue to build up your menu tabs. Making sure that at least one is the Top Nav - Selected shape from the Collaboration Site Top Navigation Stencil.

When you have done all your tabs, you can select all the Menu Tabs, and using the SHAPE -> ALIGN SHAPES -> VERTICAL ALIGNMENT (set to TOP)

Step 9
Once you have done all this click OK

Step 10
Use your mouse to select the Menu Tab that you have added in the Selected state. With this selected, right click the mouse on the shape to reveal the menu.

You need to move the selected shape to the FRONT.

Congratulations
Congratulations your Top Navigation Tab menu is complete.
